CAPE TOWN: Pakistan resumed their first innings on the third day at 64-3, trailing South Africa in the second Test at Newlands Cricket Ground, Cape Town.

The team faced early setbacks in the final session of day two as they sought to go past the hosts' imposing total of 615 runs.

With Babar Azam (31*) and Mohammad Rizwan (9*) at the crease, the visitors aim to stabilise their innings and improve their position in the match.

Babar and Rizwan put together a brilliant 98-run partnership for the fourth wicket to ease the pressure, but it was soon broken when Maphaka dismissed Babar for 58, leaving the side at 118/4 in 34.5 overs.

On the second day, Pakistan suffered a disastrous start to their innings, losing three quick wickets, including skipper Shan Masood in the first over, dismissed by Kagiso Rabada.

Kamran Ghulam followed in the sixth over, leaving the Green Shirts reeling at 18-2. Rabada struck again in the ninth over, removing Saud Shakeel for a duck.

Earlier batting first, South Africa posted a dominant first-innings total of 615, with a remarkable 259-run knock by makeshift opener Ryan Rickelton.

Kyle Verreynne contributed to the onslaught with a blistering century off just 147 balls, leaving Pakistan's bowling attack struggling to find answers.

Among the bowlers, Mohammad Abbas and Salman Ali Agha claimed three wickets each, while Mir Hamza and Khurram Shahzad took two wickets apiece.

Already trailing 1-0 in the two-match series, Pakistan must win the second Test to level the series.
